Self-cleaning glass, also known as self-cleaning windows or photocatalytic glass, is a type of glass that has a special coating applied to its surface, which allows it to clean itself when exposed to sunlight or artificial light. This innovative technology aims to reduce the need for manual cleaning and maintenance of glass surfaces, such as windows and facades.

The self-cleaning capability of this glass is primarily based on two processes: photocatalysis and hydrophilicity. The coating applied to the glass surface contains a photocatalyst, commonly titanium dioxide (TiO2). When sunlight or ultraviolet (UV) light strikes the coating, it activates the photocatalyst and initiates a chemical reaction.

The photocatalytic reaction caused by the activated TiO2 coating breaks down organic dirt and pollutants that are deposited on the glass surface. These organic substances, such as dirt, grime, and organic compounds, are decomposed into smaller particles or gases, which are then easily washed away by rainfall or can be easily rinsed off by water.

Additionally, the hydrophilic property of self-cleaning glass plays a significant role in its functionality. The coating promotes water sheeting instead of beading on the glass surface. This allows the water to spread evenly and form a thin, uniform film, enhancing the cleaning effect. The water film carries away the loosened dirt particles and dries off without leaving streaks or water spots on the glass.

The combined effect of photocatalysis and hydrophilicity helps to maintain the cleanliness of the glass surface over time, as the self-cleaning process is continuously activated when exposed to light. However, it's important to note that self-cleaning glass may still require occasional cleaning in situations where it is not exposed to sufficient light or in areas with heavy soiling or debris buildup.

Self-cleaning glass has gained popularity in various applications, including residential and commercial buildings, automotive windows, solar panels, and other glass surfaces where cleanliness and maintenance are important factors.
